Books we’re putting in our beach bags this summer

August 18, 2021

We’re big summer reading people. There’s a reason that summer is the most popular season for books to be set in. Small seaside hometowns, a perpetual ocean breeze, vacations with lazy pool days. We crave the escapism that these summer reads give us.

Here’s what we’re putting in our beach bags this summer:

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Set in Malibu in 1983. Need we say anymore? Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. By midnight, their lives change forever.

Rock the Boat by Beck Dorey-Stein

Okay, we got a seaside hometown book here!! Old friends reunite for the summer in their local town by the water amid upheaval in their personal lives. Smart and witty, just how we like our summer reads.

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

From the author of the beloved Beach Read comes another stellar summer book, People We Meet on Vacation. This book follows two best friends, Poppy and Alex, as they navigate 10 summer vacations together, ultimately to discover that they are meant for one another no matter the destination. Cue the aww’s.

Anything by Elin Hilderbrand

The quintessential summer books are written by Elin Hilderbrand. Most of her romance novels are set in Nantucket, where she lives. You can’t go wrong with any of her sun-soaked stories.

The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris

This one isn’t set in summer, but we had to throw in a psychological pageturner for all you thrillseekers. The story follows two young Black women navigating microaggressions and threats in the workplace of New York City’s book publishing industry.

That Summer by Jennifer Weiner

The name says it all. This summer read is focused on the power of female friendships and intrigue all while in the landscape of the Outer Cape.

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

You can’t go wrong with a Sally Rooney book for the summer. Her new book focuses on two Irish couples traveling and navigating the world. Sounds like classic Rooney.
